Birth Records and Pamlico County History

Pamlico County was created in 1872 from Craven County. It is one of the newer counties in North Carolina and also one of the smallest by population. The county sits on a peninsula between the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound. Bayboro has served as the county seat since the county's founding.

The area's economy has long been tied to fishing, farming, and forestry. Families here have deep roots in the coastal plain. Before 1913, births were not officially registered. Church records and family Bibles were the main sources. The State Archives Bible Records collection includes documents from this region. After North Carolina's vital records law took effect under Chapter 130A of the General Statutes, the Register of Deeds became the official custodian.
