Graham County Genealogy Resources

Graham County was created in 1872 from Cherokee County. It sits in one of the most mountainous and isolated parts of North Carolina. The Nantahala National Forest covers much of the county. Robbinsville has been the seat of county government since the beginning.

For family history research before 1913, the FamilySearch Graham County genealogy page provides useful guides and links to digitized records. Cherokee tribal records, church logs, and old census data can also help piece together family histories in this area. The State Archives of North Carolina holds additional historical documents from the western mountain counties.

The Nantahala National Forest covers much of Graham County, and the area has long been home to both Cherokee and European settler communities. This mixed heritage means researchers may need to check multiple types of records to trace their lines. Federal census records, Indian rolls, and mountain church records can all provide clues about births and family ties before the state began formal registration.

Delayed birth records are also available at the Graham County office. These filings were created for people whose births were never officially recorded at the time they occurred. A delayed registration can serve as legal proof of birth when no original certificate exists.

Note: Graham County is one of the least populated counties in North Carolina, so records may be limited in volume.
