Gates County History and Family Research

Gates County was formed in 1779 from parts of Perquimans, Chowan, and Hertford Counties. Gatesville has been the county seat since that time. The county sits in the far northeastern corner of North Carolina, bordering Virginia. It remains one of the smallest and most rural counties in the state.

Birth records at the county level start in 1914, one year after most North Carolina counties began registration. Delayed birth records are also on file for births that were not registered at the time. A delayed registration can serve as legal proof of birth when the original was never filed. For older records, the FamilySearch Gates County genealogy page offers research guides and links to digitized sources. Church records, Bible entries, and census data can help fill gaps before formal registration began.

Gates County borders Virginia to the north, which means some families have roots that cross the state line. If you are tracing family history in this area, checking both North Carolina and Virginia records may be necessary. The State Archives of North Carolina holds historical documents from the Gates County area that can supplement what is available at the local office.
