Who Can Request Raleigh Birth Certificates

North Carolina restricts access to certified birth certificates. Only certain individuals may request a copy. The person named on the record can always get their own certificate. Parents and legal guardians also qualify. A spouse, adult child, or attorney with proper authorization can request copies as well.

You must present a valid government-issued photo ID. Requests without proper identification will be denied. Making a false statement on the application is a felony under NC vital records law.

Raleigh Historical Birth Records Research

Raleigh was founded in 1792 as a planned capital city. Birth registration in North Carolina did not begin until 1913. Records before that year are limited. The State Archives of North Carolina, located right in Raleigh, holds historical documents including church records, census data, and other sources that can help trace births before 1913.

Wake County was formed in 1771. Early settlers left behind land grants, tax lists, and church registers that genealogists use today. The Bible Records collection at the State Archives is especially helpful for documenting births in the Raleigh area from the 1700s and 1800s.

Raleigh is home to North Carolina State University, founded in 1887. University records sometimes contain birth data for early students and staff. The Olivia Raney Local History Library in downtown Raleigh also holds records that genealogists find valuable for tracing families in Wake County. Meredith College and Shaw University, both in Raleigh, also hold historical records from their early years that may reference births in the area.

Raleigh Birth Certificate Requirements

When visiting a Wake County office, you will need to provide specific information about the birth you are requesting. This includes the full legal name at birth, the date of birth, the place of birth, and the full names of both parents. Having this information ready speeds up your visit. If you do not know all the details, the staff may still be able to locate the record with partial information, though it may take longer.

Certified copies issued by Wake County include a raised seal and a registrar signature. These copies are accepted for passports, driver's license applications, and Social Security purposes. The state ordering page provides additional guidance on what qualifies as a certified copy in North Carolina. Uncertified copies, which lack the official seal, may be available at a lower cost but are not accepted by most government agencies.
